History of PASS
PASS began in 1983, with the charter mission “to remove or reduce the desire for abortion across Chicago’s Southland”.
Through the years, God would lead us into a multi-leveled strategy that would target abortion from many perspectives:
- Prevention
- Crisis Intervention
- Life-skills education
- Housing
- Restoration
PASS is founded on the gospel of Jesus Christ, who told us:
“satan has come to steal, kill and destroy, but I have come that they might have life, and that more abundantly” John 10:10
In everything that is done at PASS, there are four unchangeable values that govern us:
- God is the creator of life, and therefore all life is sacred
- Salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ alone
- by God’s design, sexuality is to be shared only within a marriage union of a man and a woman, and
- Freely we have received, therefore, we freely give. Absolutely no client will ever be charged any price for any services that PASS offers.
PASS has been operating pregnancy care centers in the southland since 1983 and touches between 2500 and 3000 lives every year.
In 1988, PASS began the IMPACT! abstinence education program in response to requests from teachers in our local public schools. IMPACT has educated over 150,000 students since its launch.
In 1991, Lisa Niebergall raised up a program for those who were experiencing the aftermath of abortion, or those who have experienced abuse, rape, incest; or other significant loss, mourning, or grief. The Hope and Healing program is well named, as it brings Hope and Healing to hearts and souls that are numbed and deadened.
When the Tinley Park center opened its new facility in 2004, the Benjamin B. Green-Field Foundation recommended PASS for a grant to build out 20% of our overall space to use for training and meeting facility. The availability of this space made the way for the integration and expansion of several educational programs for our clients, including the Abundant Life Program, which teaches life-skills to new mothers.
Providing housing for young women experiencing pregnancy has always been a top priority at PASS. Since women are 6 times more likely to be physically abused during pregnancy, safe housing must be available as needed. 10 years ago, the Shepherd’s House maternity home opened in New Lenox, and PASS converted all its referrals to this beautiful facility, which provides love, safety and tools for building futures for both mother and child. In 2007 the ministries merged and the home is now part of our network of life affirming care.
The story above took 25 years to write. Like a single candle’s flickering light – in a world that SO feels the pressure of darkness. But what light!! And its getting brighter!!!
We realize that many visiting this site are long-time PASS supporters – but honestly – did you have any idea that PASS did all of this?
It all becomes so real-life powerful when one spends time at that fabulous new center on Oak Park Ave at a “Thursday Night Tours”
And with the expanded ministry opportunities come the growing need for more people to partner with us to deliver these services.
We ask only that you prayerfully consider partnering with PASS –
Our greatest need is partnership in this important ministry - Servants working together to assure the services of PASS continue long after all of us are united with Jesus in heaven.
